My greatest achievement is...

...being elected the MP for Blackpool and North Cleveleys.

I am in a unique position of being able to highlight a variety of disability issues, and I hope this means that groups of people whose voices are not often heard in the political sphere may now be heard.

I have cerebral palsy and epilepsy. As far as I know, Laura Sandys MP and I are the first MPs to publicly declare we have epilepsy.

I never planned a career in politics. I graduated and went into management consultancy, which didn’t really excite me. When the consultancy I was working for went bust, I was on the dole with a mortgage to pay. I wrote to the Conservative Central Office and within a week I was employed in the research department. I looked around and thought “If they can do it, I can. I’ll be an MP – why not?”

My invitation to become a vice-president of Epilepsy Action was a natural progression. I am honoured and hope I can make a difference when campaigning.
