If you or your child’s teachers are still concerned about your child’s progress, the class teacher or practitioner and SENCO may decide that your child should be at the ‘Action Plus’ stage of the framework. Outside specialists will be involved at this stage, and could help in several different ways. These specialists may be therapists (for example communication or occupational therapists), educational psychologists, specialist teachers or advisors, or medical professionals. The outside specialist could act as an advisor or consultant to support your child’s teachers or practitioners, could help assess your child’s progress, or could work directly with your child.

At this stage, the SENCO and your child’s class teacher or practitioner should work together to assess your child’s learning difficulties and put together plans to help your child.

The SENCO and class teacher or practitioner could:

  • seek advice from outside specialists, for example your child’s specialist nurse or doctor, about the educational implications of their epilepsy and any other medical factors that may be relevant;
  • put together a plan to support your child’s learning;
  • make sure the plan is fully and effectively implemented; and
  • discuss with you ways that you can help your child at home.
