Epilepsy Medicines

Daily Medicines

The main way of treating epilepsy is with epilepsy medicines.

Most epilepsy medicines are taken at regular times every day. Generally, these medicines do not need to be taken during the school day.

Emergency medicines

A student with epilepsy may need emergency medicine to be given at school if they have:

  • convulsions that last five minutes or longer or
  • three or more convulsions in an hour

Each country in the UK has their own guidance for giving medicines in schools:

  • England -The Department for Education (DfE) have guidance about Managing medicines
  • Scotland -The Scottish Executive have produced The Administration of Medicines in Schools
  • Wales -The Welsh Assembly have produced Access to Education and Support for Children and Young People with Medical Needs
  • Northern Ireland -The Department of Education in Northern Ireland have produced Supporting Pupils with Medication Needs

Epilepsy Action’s Epilepsy policy for schools has information about giving and managing emergency epilepsy medicines.
