Policies and procedures
Good policies and procedures can help schools support pupils with medical needs. The document Managing medicines in schools and early years settings explains how schools should develop and use these policies. For example:
- Children with medical needs have the same rights of admission to schools as other children.
- Employers (school governors or authorities) should give schools guidelines about children with medical needs.
- Schools should use their employer’s guidelines to write their own policies. A model policy for children with epilepsy is available from Epilepsy Action.
- The school should make their policies available to parents.
- Pupils with medical needs should be included in all school activities. School staff should receive enough training and support to make sure this happens.
Managing medicines in schools and early years settings is available to download or order from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) ordering centre.
A model policy for children with epilepsy is available from Epilepsy Action.
