This information is for prison staff dealing with prisoners with epilepsy. Further information on safety is on our website.
Epilepsy is a very individual condition. For example, you will need to think more about the safety of prisoners with uncontrolled seizures than of those whose seizures are well controlled.
Some things to consider:
- cell and bunk allocation
- bathing – having a seizure in the bath could result in drowning
- sport or leisure – some gym activities may not be safe
- work environment – for example the kitchens – might be unsafe
- being isolated – from what you know about their epilepsy, would this be safe for the prisoner?
- is the prisoner at risk of having seizures that need emergency intervention?
- is the prisoner identified as being in the high risk category for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP)?
