St John’s Wort is a herbal treatment that you can buy without a prescription at a pharmacy. It is used to treat people with depression.
Information from the British National Formulary says that people who take epilepsy medicines (anti-epileptic drugs) should not take St John’s Wort. This is because it can affect the way epilepsy medicines work. This could mean you have more seizures than usual. Or it could mean you have more side-effects from your epilepsy medicine.
We can provide references and information on the source material we use to write our epilepsy advice and information pages. Please contact our Epilepsy Helpline by email at helpline@epilepsy.org.uk.
