A double decker bus emblazoned with Epilepsy Action banners made its journey around our south west area at the end of August. We covered six different venues and it is amazing that over 1,300 people came to visit the bus. We were able to distribute almost 4,000 pieces of Epilepsy Action information. The commitment of our volunteers during the event made me feel really privileged to work for our charity.

71 of our local services volunteers gave up their time to help us make the roadshow such a success. Two of our volunteers took a week’s holiday to support the entire event at their own expense. Others travelled a 300 mile round trip from North Devon to support us.

Being involved in the Roadshow really brought home the impact our work can have on the lives of people affected by epilepsy. We met some amazingly wonderful, inspiring people.
Alex from our Dorchester and Weymouth branch did a fantastic radio interview to promote the event. He spent two days in Weymouth and Bournemouth engaging with dozens of young people who came to the bus. He proudly informed me at the end of the Bournemouth day that his plan was to start a group for young people with epilepsy in Dorset.
Kim from the charity KIDZ, came along to lead our children’s activities. She spent the week talking to families with epilepsy about her experiences of growing up with epilepsy and cerebral palsy. Watching families being moved by Kim’s life story was inspiring. The KIDZ charity engaged with almost 300 families during the event.
There was some heart wrenching stories like the family who travelled from Basingstoke to Bournemouth. They came to thank us for the advice and support our helpline team gave them after the family was devastated by SUDEP.
This was a really worthwhile event, and we look forward to many more wonderful experiences like this working for Epilepsy Action.
