India Motorcycle Challenge

18-27 October 2008

Indian motorcyclists

Motorcycle through India

Challenge yourself. To travel 1,300km through Indian countryside on the famous Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle is no easy ride.

The Indian sub-continent has an incredible variety of landscapes to travel through, and a remarkable motorcycle from which to see them. From the Shatabdi Express to Amritsar’s Golden Temple, Rohtang-La to Bir, India offers the most amazing sites, sounds and experiences as you savour the laid-back beat of your machine.

Itinerary

Day 1

  • Depart UK. Arrive in Delhi and transfer to your hotel.

Day 2

  • We will board the Shatabdi Express, an air-conditioned, ‘superfast’ train at 0720 and arrive in Amritsar at 1305.

  • Here you will be introduced to your Enfield Bullet, and will spend the rest of the afternoon getting acquainted.

  • In the evening, we will ride the 28km to Wagah, the only open border between India and Pakistan. The gates between the two countries are closed shortly before sunset every night, and the border guards from each side take great pride in vying to outdo each other in the elaborateness of their closing ceremony – quite a spectacle!

  • Afterwards we will ride back to our hotel in Amritsar

MotorcyclistsDay 3

  • Today, we visit Amritsar’s amazing Golden Temple at dawn, and then hit the road, arriving in Dharamsala by early afternoon.

  • Dharamsala is best known for being home to the Dalai Lama, and today we will have the chance to visit his Tibetan Government.

  • High in the foothills of the Himalayas, and surrounded by dense pine forest, Dharamsala is a great place to simply wander around, taking in the intriguing mixture of Indian and Tibetan cultures.

  • Distance travelled – 200 km

Day 4

  • A short and mostly downhill ride takes us to the beautiful village of Bir. There will be a day’s trekking on offer through the stunning hills nearby

  • Tonight we camp high in the hills – a stunning place to wake up!

  • Distance travelled – 80 km

Motorbike and elephant Day 5

  • A tricky ride through the hills takes us to Manali, nestled in the mountains by the banks of the River Beas, and a long-standing travellers’ favourite.

  • Here we will take the amazing ride up to Rohtang-La, a mountain pass at almost 4,000m, which offers superb views of the Himalayas.

  • Distance travelled – 250 km

Day 6

  • The area around Simla offers some of the best riding in India – today’s ride takes us along well-surfaced roads which twist and turn through an endless chain of hills – biking heaven!

  • Simla was the summer capital of India under the British, and retains plenty of colonial charm.

  • Distance travelled – 175 km

Day 7

  • A long, tiring day’s ride through some of the most beautiful scenery in the region.

  • Tonight we camp in luxurious tents on the banks of the mighty River Ganges, having come through Rishikesh, ‘Yoga Capital of the World’, en route.

  • Distance travelled – 280 km

Day 8

  • A long but mainly flat ride gives you a last chance to savour the laid-back beat of both your Enfield Bullet and the villages you will be riding it through.

  • We end the day back in Delhi, and should have enough time to take in some of the city’s sights, including the amazing India Gate at sunset.

  • The evening will end with a presentation dinner, before you are transferred back to Delhi Airport for your flight back to the UK.

  • Distance travelled – 250 km

Day 9

  • Arrive back in UK.

Please note that while we make every effort to stick to this schedule and the accommodation stated, this is subject to alteration.
