Epilepsy on the beach

Epilepsy Action, in partnership with Freedom Surf, Cornwall Sports Partnership and Active Devon, are organising three unique events in the UK. We want to give children with epilepsy and families a unique surfing experience. We have 200 surf lessons to give away!

We are very lucky to have the support of Freedom Surf, who are providing free surf lessons. Freedom Surf is a disabled surfing project whose mission is to provide fun and life changing experiences to people with disabilities. All instructors are professional surf instructors. They have had specialist training and experience of working with people with disabilities. So, participants will be safe at all times and their needs understood.

For those who don’t want to surf, there will also be a variety of beach activities and games (provided by Active Devon and the Cornwall Sports Partnership) including volleyball, beach tennis, ultimate Frisbee, soft ball and cricket. Epilepsy Action volunteers are running a sandcastle competition too – a true family experience with something for all!

Events have already happened in Newquay and Torbay.  The final event is at:

Surf lessons are entirely FREE AND SAFE. There will be three surf lessons a day, each accommodating 10 people. Lessons need to be booked in advance by contacting Jackie Kemp at Epilepsy Action on 0113 210 8800 or completing the online form.

Register your interest for surfing lessons

Beach activities will take place from 10.00am until 5.00pm (closed for lunch 12.00pm to 2.00pm).

The big red information bus will provide information on epilepsy and will be open from 10.00am until 5.00pm (closed for lunch 12.00pm to 1.00pm).

Epilepsy Action will provide updates on this event through our live Twitter feed at @epilepsyaction

Georgie, one of our volunteers, has made this video:

Mark, founder of Freedom Surf, said: “We are urging people to sign up for this event and take advantage of this collaboration with Epilepsy Action, Freedom Surf and Active Devon. Freedom Surf is the only surf school in the country only to offer lessons to people with disabilities so come and grab yourself a free surfing lesson.”
