Making Or Changing Your Will

Grandfather and grandchild

To make your Will, just follow these five simple steps:

  • List your assets. You may not feel wealthy, but you are probably worth more than you realise. Don’t forget that your assets include; your house and its contents, bank and building society accounts, other investments like shares, jewellery, life policies and anything else of value.
  • Decide who you want to benefit from your Will. Primarily you will want to provide for your family’s future, but also think about friends and other people you might want to remember. You might also decide to support the charities - such as Epilepsy Action - that you’ve always wanted to help. Also think about what you want to leave to each person or organisation.
  • Next, decide how best to leave your legacies. Details of various kinds of bequests you could make are listed in the Glossary.
  • Find a solicitor. You may already have a family solicitor, or have used one to buy or sell a house. Otherwise, friends can recommend a good solicitor, or try Yellow Pages, the local high street or even your local Citizens Advice Bureau.
  • Keep your Will up to date! Once it is made you can be more confident about the future of those you care about. However remember to review your Will if any important changes take place in your life, like moving house, getting married, having children or coming into money!
