Scafell Pike
Friday 3 July – Sunday 5 July 2009
Scafell Pike, situated in the Cumbrian mountains in the beautiful Lake District is England’s highest peak. It stands 978 metres high (3,208 feet) and is climbed by thousands of people each year. Along with Ben Nevis and Snowdon, it is one of the mountains climbed as part of the Three Peaks Challenge.
Originally the name ‘The Pikes of Sca Fell’ was applied to the peaks which are nowadays known as Scafell Pike, III Crag and Broad Crag.
Scafell Pike was donated to the National Trust in the fist quarter of the 20th Century by Lord Leconfield in memory of the men who fell in the First World War.
There are two main routes up Scafell Pike, from Wasdale Head Inn and the other starting from Seathwaite in Borrowdale. The second is a longer route, but one which rewards the walker with magnificent views and this will be our route.
Accommodation
Walkers will be accommodated in Glaramara Adventure Centre. The accommodation is of a good standard in twin bedded rooms with shared facilities.
Food and drink
Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner will be provided and are included in the cost.
Guides
All of our guides are highly motivated, experienced mountaineers and also qualified first aiders. They offer both experience and encouragement, as well as sharing their great sense of humour!
Transport
Transport will always be on hand during the trip to transport us to our evening accommodation and to take luggage to our overnight stop. It will also be there for safety should anyone retire from the event for any reason.
Each walker will be responsible for getting to Glaramara Adventure Centre, Borrowdale, on the evening before the Scafell Pike trek. Walkers who wish, can be picked up at Glasgow City Centre or Penrith Railway Station (and dropped off at the end of the challenge) at an additional cost.
Cost
Participants are asked to pledge to raise £400 sponsorship money in order to cover all costs and ensure Epilepsy Action benefits significantly. Obviously, if you can raise more than the minimum amount it would be greatly appreciated. We ask that £133 of the sponsorship is sent in at least three weeks before the event and the remaining £267 is sent in 28 days after the event. An additional £75 non-refundable deposit is required with each application.
