I recently got married to my boyfriend of ten years in July 2010. We had a fantastic day and I am glad to say everything passed off without any major hitches. As everyone knows there is a great deal of expense involved when planning a wedding. By the time reception costs, photography, dresses etc are all paid for, it can all add up to a substantial amount. When deciding on what wedding favours to choose for our special day, we thought of ideas like candles that would match with the colour scheme or sweets and then we had the idea of giving to charity. So much money had been spent on other things we thought it would be a good idea to give something back. We talked about a few charities we had in mind, but in the end decided to go for epilepsy action. My husband, Jonathan suffers from a mild form of epilepsy and while he is on medication for life he doesn't have the extreme seizures that some people have to endure. Epilepsy action provided support for his family when he was first diagnosed at the age of 8 and while it was a very traumatic time for all the family it was a great comfort to know that someone was there at the end of the phone offering advice and reassurance when needed. I got in contact with epilepsy action before our wedding to see if it was possible to organise favours. They got in touch really quickly and had a few ideas that we could choose from. We wanted everyone at our reception to know we had donated and we wanted a memento for our guests to keep. We decided to give each guest an epilepsy action charity pin and we also placed cards on each table informing people of our chosen charity. We are both delighted that someone will benefit from our decision to donate to such a worthy charity and hope more will choose the option we did in the future

I decided to have a big party for my 40th birthday to give us the chance of marking a happy event. The previous year had been rather a difficult one for my family with the death of my father after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease and the news that our daughter was being considered as a surgery candidate in order to control her epilepsy.

We had a fantastic night and have lots of lovely memories. I decided to ask my friends and family for donations instead of gifts. I placed the gift aid envelopes on each table at the venue. I was delighted to find that my guests had been so generous. They know that epilepsy is a subject that is so close to our hearts.

Epilepsy Action has been a great source of information and I am a member of Forum4E too. I find the support, care and wealth of knowledge on the forum to be invaluable.

It’s like being part of a family.

It feels wonderful to be able to give something back and hopefully the donations will help support the charity and be of assistance to other people.
