Epilepsy Action Branch Member Of The Year Award in Stamford

Pam Milne, stalwart of the Stamford Branch of Epilepsy Action, has won a national award in recognition of her work for the UK’s largest member-led epilepsy charity.

The Epilepsy Action Branch Member of the Year Award will be presented to Pam by Epilepsy Action’s Chief Executive, Philip Lee, on Thursday 31 May from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, at The Meeting Room, Stamford and Rutland Hospital, Ryhall Road, Stamford.

Schools must do better to support pupils with epilepsy

A survey, by UK charity Epilepsy Action, released this week reveals that children with epilepsy are not being fully supported in schools, according to teachers and parents. The survey suggests that children with epilepsy are not reaching their full potential, not performing in line with their classmates and regularly miss school because of their epilepsy.

When the film Titanic was released in 1998 it caused problems for some people with photosensitive epilepsy. This was due to a scene which contained flickering lights. The film is being re-released this weekend. Epilepsy Action contacted 20th Century Fox to ask if anything was being done to make people aware of this. A spokesperson told us that they have alerted cinemas to the problem. They have advised cinemas that warnings should be present to inform cinema-goers.

Epilepsy can affect individuals in many ways and there are over 40 different types of seizures. People with epilepsy experience the condition in a way which is very unique to them and the support they need will vary greatly. This means that many people with epilepsy will not need to apply for benefits such as Disability Living Allowance and Personal Independence Payment.
