Tegretol products

5 May, 2011

All Tegretol products are made by the drug company Novartis. Some Tegretol packets will have Novartis on them. Some will have the name Geigy on them. These are still made by Novartis. Novartis took over Geigy some years ago and are using up old packaging. Whether your drug says Novartis or Geigy, you are getting the same drug.

Novartis have also renamed Tegretol Retard. Tegretol Retard is now called Tegretol Prolonged Release.

REMINDER FROM APRIL 2010. New markings on Tegretol tablets.

In April 2010, the markings on Tegretol (carbamazepine) tablets changed. The 100 mg tablet has CG on one side and B/W on the other. The 200 mg tablet has CG on one side and G/K on the other.

There is also a change to the content of Tegretol. A finer grade of microcrystalline cellulose is used. Microcrystalline cellulose is an ingredient that binds the tablet together.

Novartis, the company that makes Tegretol, say they have tested Tegretol to produce an identical tablet.  However, anyone who finds they have a problem with side-effects from these tablets should discuss this with their doctor. They can also report them to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) by completing a Yellow Card. There are forms available in pharmacies, doctors' surgeries and other NHS outlets across the UK. Alternatively, they can report suspected side-effects on the Yellow Card website or by phoning the Yellow Card hotline, freephone: 0808 100 3352.’ You may also wish to discuss your concerns will our Helpline team, on 0808 800 5050.
