Empowerment and information for epilepsy in Bury St Edmunds

16 May, 2011

Epilepsy Action, the UK’s largest member-led epilepsy organisation, is hosting an event to support people with epilepsy.

It will take place on Saturday 21 May – the end of National Epilepsy Week (15 - 22 May). The venue is Quaker Meeting House, St Johns Street, Bury St Edmunds, from 2.00pm until 5.00pm.

The aim of the event is to empower people with epilepsy with information so they have a better understanding of their condition. Dr Molyneux, consultant neurologist from West Suffolk Hospital, will give a presentation on the different seizure and syndrome types and explain why this makes epilepsy diagnoses difficult.

Lynda Topalian from West Suffolk Hospital will be talking about the development of the epilepsy service in West Suffolk. She will also talk about her role as a community based epilepsy specialist nurse. The West Suffolk Epilepsy Service aims to provide a comprehensive service, achieved through home visits and clinics.

Lynda Topalian said: “We are aiming to raise the profile of epilepsy across West Suffolk. We are planning a transitional service for adolescents, and have plans to introduce a pregnancy and epilepsy clinic. We are also developing an educational program aimed at school children to reduce the stigma that is attached to epilepsy.”

Julie Clark, Epilepsy Action’s local services manager for central England, said: “We aim to help people learn to live with their epilepsy so it doesn’t take over their lives.”

Tickets cost £6.00 for delegates (£4.00 concessions), £10 for a couple (£6.00 concessions). Seats are limited so to book a place, or for further information, please contact Joanne Baker on 0113 210 8884, or email jbaker@epilepsy.org.uk
