Ormesby Lads Football Club is hosting a 24-hour football marathon in memory of a past player. The club will attempt the challenge to raise vital funds for national charity Epilepsy Action. The charity provides advice and support to the 600,000 people with epilepsy in the UK.
Players at the club will be joined by players from Caister Roma to play football for 24 hours over Friday 13 and Saturday 14 April. A total of 200 players will take part in 72 football matches. The marathon is in memory of Oliver Scott-Greenard, a former player at Ormesby Lads FC and Caister Roma FC. Oliver died in 2011 after having an epileptic seizure. Oliver’s family have asked for proceeds from the football marathon to be donated to Epilepsy Action in his memory.
Tim Kitson, at Ormesby Lads Football Club, said: “We’ll be playing 72 matches over 24 hours - something I don’t think has been done before. I hope we can raise vital funds for Epilepsy Action and that we can all keep smiling throughout the marathon, even at 3am!”
The football marathon takes place from 6.00pm on Friday 13 April at Yo Football, Great Yarmouth. The club hopes to raise at least £1,500 for Epilepsy Action. The money raised will help to support Epilepsy Action’s work all over the UK. The charity campaigns to improve epilepsy services and raise awareness of epilepsy. It also provides a national network of support groups, funds a specialist nurse scheme, holds regular regional conferences and has a freephone and email helpline.
Epilepsy affects one in every 103 people in the UK alone and 87 people are diagnosed with the condition every day. Last year Epilepsy Action directly helped 1.1 million people through its range of services.
