Peterborough man walks his way to charity ‘wonga’

23 June, 2010

A Peterborough man is preparing to raise serious ‘wonga’ for Epilepsy Action, the UK’s largest member-led epilepsy charity.

Roger Stimson has organised an Epilepsy Action Wonga Walk through Nene Park, Ferry Meadows, Peterborough from 9.30am on Sunday 4 July. It is hoped 80 walkers will complete the six- mile route, which starts and finishes at Rivergate (outside Asda).

Roger, who was secretary of the Peterborough Branch of Epilepsy Action until 2009, said: “I have organised a walk to raise money for Epilepsy Action every year since 2003. It should be a great day out with food provided along the way. We usually have around 80 people taking part in the walk so I hope we have a strong turn out again this time.”

The walk is one of several Wonga Walks taking place across the country to celebrate Epilepsy Action’s sixtieth anniversary. The charity is hoping the walks will clock up a total distance of 9,240 miles – equivalent to walking to Timbuktu and back. To achieve this target, Epilepsy Action needs 60 walking groups of 25 people, each walking a distance of six miles.

Roger hopes his walk will raise £2,000. The money raised by the Wonga Walks will help fund the vital advice and information services provided by Epilepsy Action. Walkers will be lucky enough to taste the delights of the Peterborough Sikh Temple half way round the walk.
