Feltham sister goes the extra mile for epilepsy charity

11 September, 2009

A Feltham woman is preparing to lace up her running shoes to complete the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon. Alice Fox will take part in aid of Epilepsy Action, the UK’s largest member-led epilepsy organisation.

Alice, 23, will run 13.1 miles through central London on Sunday 11 October to help support the 456,000 people living with epilepsy in the UK.  Alice, who has epilepsy, will be running for her brother, Sam, who has been affected by the condition for almost 20 years.

Alice said: "My brother Sam, 25, has had epilepsy since he was seven years old. Sam also has autism and learning difficulties and requires round-the-clock care. Sam is very sporty and an important member of his football team. I am extremely proud of my brother and constantly impressed by his determination.

"Three years ago I was diagnosed with epilepsy too. It does not affect my life in the way it does Sam's, but I've found charities such as Epilepsy Action extremely useful for information and advice.

"I hope to raise awareness of epilepsy and sponsorship money for a cause that is important to me and my family. I'm really looking forward to the atmosphere on the day – the feeling of achievement afterwards will be brilliant!"

Starting and finishing in Hyde Park, Alice will join 15,000 runners, winding her way through the stunning landscapes of St. James's Park, Green Park and Kensington Gardens.

Runners and spectators will have the opportunity to experience close-up views of the capital's most iconic landmarks including Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament.

Katie Stocks, fundraising officer at Epilepsy Action, said: "Last year the Epilepsy Action team had over 100 runners and there was a fantastic sense of unity and team spirit throughout the day. The team raised an impressive £32,000 to support people with epilepsy.

"We're hoping as many people as possible will sign up this year. The Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon is a fantastic event. The money raised by the Epilepsy Action team will make a huge difference to the lives of people affected by epilepsy."
