Come on and do the conga for epilepsy charity

14 May, 2010

National charity Epilepsy Action is urging local people to pull on their walking shoes and take part in the Derwentwater Wonga Conga. The nine-mile walk aims to raise funds to support people with epilepsy.

The event, on Sunday 13 June, takes walkers around the stunning scenery of Derwentwater.  After enjoying wonderful lake views, participants will be greeted at the end with food and fun at Keswick Rugby Club. The walk coincides with the beginning of National Epilepsy Week (13-19 June). The week aims to raise awareness of epilepsy and raise funds to help support the 456,000 people living with the condition in the UK.

The Derwentwater Wonga Conga launches Epilepsy Action’s Wonga Walks, which are taking place across the country to mark Epilepsy Action’s sixtieth anniversary. The charity is hoping the Wonga Walks will clock up a total distance of over 9,000 miles – equivalent to walking to Timbuktu and back. To achieve this target, Epilepsy Action needs 60 walking groups of 25 people, each walking a distance of six miles. The charity is now looking for walkers to take part in the Derwentwater Wonga Conga or organise their own Wonga Walk.

Michael White, fundraising events officer at Epilepsy Action, said: “We’re encouraging as many people as possible to sign up to the Derwentwater Wonga Conga or organise their very own Wonga Walk. By simply putting one foot in front of the other, you could help raise serious wonga to support people with epilepsy across the UK. All the money raised from the Wonga Walks will make a huge difference to the lives of people affected by epilepsy. So please get your walking shoes on and get walking!”

The Derwentwater Wonga Conga costs £15 a person. This includes a free Epilepsy Action T-shirt, a fundraising pack, free training advice and refreshments at Keswick Rugby Club at the end of the walk.
