Epilepsy Action - The Big Debate Takes Place In London

6 June, 2008

Some of the biggest names in epilepsy treatment are joining people living with the condition from across the UK, to join in a controversial debate. 'You need to live with epilepsy to know what it's like' will generate heated argument on both sides. This takes place in London on Saturday June 14.

The big debate will form part of this year's Epilepsy Action national conference and Annual General Meeting, entitled 'The bigger picture: what does it mean to you?'. Debates have proved massively popular at past Epilepsy Action conferences and this year's will be led by Dr John Paul Leach, consultant neurologist at Glasgow's Southern General Hospital. Dr Sallie Baxendale, clinical neuropsychologist at the National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery, London, will be speaking for the motion, with Dr Robert S Delamont, consultant neurologist at King's College Hospital, London, speaking against.

The event will run from 9.00am – 4.00pm at Novotel London St Pancras, 100-110 Euston Road, London, and a small number of places are still available.

Professor Simon Shorvon, renowned professor of clinical neurology, will open the conference with 'What is epilepsy?', an exploration of how our understanding of epilepsy has developed over recent years. Other presentations will include a talk on 'memory' by post graduate research student, Katharyn Hall, looking at how people's beliefs about their epilepsy can affect coping with memory problems. Kate Rudd, epilepsy specialist nurse, will look at 'parenting and caring' in relation to epilepsy. Professor Sanjay Sisodiya, professor of neurology, will speak about the genetic aspects of the condition.

Philip Lee, Epilepsy Action's chief executive, said: "This year's programme is deliberately designed to be interactive, involving everyone who attends. With some of the biggest names in the world of epilepsy confirmed, this year's conference is shaping up to be the best!"

Ticket prices are £19.50 full price, £12.50 for Epilepsy Action members or £10 concession for full-time students and state pension or benefit claimants. This includes a hot and cold buffet lunch.
