Five Countries, Three Days – The Ultimate Cycle Challenge!

15 July, 2008

Epilepsy Action is appealing for keen cyclists to join the Lake Geneva Five Country Cycle Challenge on September 19-21 2008, to raise vital funds for the charity.

The three day event, now in its fourth year, challenges teams of four to cycle 520 miles in relay from Northern France to Switzerland. Events Manager Philippa Corner said: “This year’s event has already been popular amongst our regular cyclists. However, we are hoping to sign up 25 teams and would love to hear from anyone who’s keen to take part. Since it began, the event has raised a staggering total of £142,000 and this year we hope to increase that figure to £200,000!”

This year is a first for Epilepsy Action’s Cycle Challenge as it will see teams travel through not one but five countries, starting in Northern France, travelling through Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany before ending at the stunning Lake Geneva in Switzerland. The route will follow mainly quiet country roads through beautiful parts of Europe you would otherwise never see.

David Fisher, a cyclist from the 2007 event, said: “This was the third Epilepsy Action Cycle Challenge I have been on and the planning, route and physical challenge just gets better. Epilepsy Action’s Cycle Challenges have become a highlight of my year and I can’t wait for the Lake Geneva Five Country Challenge in 2008.”

The entry fee for each team is £940 which covers the costs of the channel crossings, accommodation and food while in the destination countries. Each team is asked to raise at least £1000 for charity.

Stamina, map reading and leadership will be tested and it will be a great team-building exercise where cyclists will experience exhilaration and adventure. All entrants will need to be able to ride their share of the route and each team should be able to average a minimum of 15 miles per hour.

The money raised from the Lake Geneva Cycle Challenge will help fund the vital advice and information services provided by Epilepsy Action, the UK’s largest member-led epilepsy charity. Last year alone the organisation directly helped over 731,000 people through a range of services including its Epilepsy Helpline, advice and information centre, and branch network.
