Fourth Bradford 10k sprints into the New Year

5 January, 2011

Leeds-based national charity Epilepsy Action is encouraging the people of West Yorkshire to work off their Christmas calories by taking part in the charity’s fourth annual Bradford 10k road race. It is hoped that over a thousand people will take to the streets of Bradford on Sunday 20 March to raise vital funds for the charity.

The race has become a permanent fixture on Bradford’s events calendar since it began in 2008. Since then, it has raised over £82,000 for Epilepsy Action and almost 2,500 runners have crossed the finish line.

The 10k route, which starts and ends in Centenary Square, is mostly flat and will be closed to all traffic. This makes the course appealing to first-time runners and elite runners looking to achieve a personal best time.

The run is supported by Airedale Athletics and, as in previous years, Airedale Athletics will be running training clinics in the lead up to the event to help runners prepare.

Katie Stocks, fundraising events officer at Epilepsy Action, said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the support people in Bradford have given to this event and it continues to go from strength to strength. We hope this year will be no exception. This is a great event for runners of all abilities. With over a thousand runners taking to the streets, there is always a fantastic atmosphere and sense of occasion. The money raised from this event is vital in helping us support people with epilepsy, an often overlooked and misunderstood condition.”

There are prizes to be won for both males and females placed first, second and third, and for winners of the veterans' categories. A free T-shirt will be provided to everyone who successfully completes the race. Refreshments will be available throughout the day and during the course of the race.

Entry costs £16, or £14 for runners affiliated to a UK athletics running club. For more information or to sign up, visit www.epilepsy.org.uk/involved/bradford10k, or call the fundraising team on 0113 210 8800. The closing date for entries is Sunday 13 March.

Epilepsy affects one in every 131 people in the UK alone and 75 people are diagnosed with the condition every day. Last year Epilepsy Action directly helped over 688,000 people through a range of services, including its Epilepsy Helpline freephone 0808 800 5050, branch network, specialist nurse scheme and award-winning website, www.epilepsy.org.uk
