Get your priorities straight – have your say on epilepsy treatment

29 April, 2009

Epilepsy Action's prestigious National Conference and Annual General Meeting is returning to the north for 2009. Some of the major names in the field of epilepsy will be offering their knowledge and expertise to explore this year's theme of 'Prioritising epilepsy – who decides?'

Professor Pamela Crawford, consultant neurologist at York District Hospital, will open the conference, which will take place in Gateshead on Saturday 13 June. Professor Crawford's presentation, "Who has Epilepsy?", will explore how everyone's experience of epilepsy is different, depending on the person.

This will be followed by the return of the ever popular Big Debate. This year's debate will examine whether everyone with epilepsy receives equal treatment regardless of who they are or where they live. Dr Paul McKee, neurologist at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, will lead what is always a lively and passionate debate. Dr Tony Marson, professor of neurology at the University of Liverpool and consultant neurologist at The Walton Centre, Liverpool, will put forward the opposing view.

The Big Debate will be followed by Epilepsy Action's Annual General Meeting. The meeting will report on the charity's activities during 2008 and there will be a chance to ask questions to the trustees. After a buffet lunch, three thought-provoking afternoon sessions will allow attendees to have their say on various issues affecting people with epilepsy. These include: living with the social impact of epilepsy, how the condition is treated and how healthcare policy can improve epilepsy services

All sessions are suitable for anyone with an interest in epilepsy. The conference will give everyone a chance to speak up, ask questions and offer their own opinions on epilepsy services.

Philip Lee, Epilepsy Action's chief executive, said: "We hope to see people from all over the country attending. It also provides a wonderful chance for all our supporters in north east England to come and join us. The day promises to be as interesting and enjoyable as ever. There will be plenty of opportunities for people to get involved in the various sessions or just sit back and take it all in."

The conference will run from 9.30 am – 4.00 pm in the shadow of the stunning Millennium Bridge at the luxurious Hilton Hotel in Gateshead. Ticket prices are £18 full price, £11 for Epilepsy Action members. Concessions are priced at £13 for non-members and £8 for members. Prices include a hot and cold buffet lunch.
