Epilepsy Action, the UK’s largest member-led epilepsy organisation, is hosting an event in Chester to encourage people with epilepsy to make positive differences to their lives.
The event will take place on 28 April at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Trinity Street, Chester, from 10.00am until 3.30pm, and will include a free swim in the spa.
Sheila Lewis, an epilepsy specialist nurse from the Walton Centre, will be speaking about the medical management of epilepsy. There will then be an opportunity to take part in a very gentle yoga session with Mia Goodenough, a Yoga teacher with the British Wheel of Yoga, therapist and complimentary therapy trainer.
After lunch, there will be a workshop on mindfulness mediation. Substantial research into the health benefits of mindfulness meditation and yoga indicates that regular practice can significantly benefit physical and psychological health. Both are safe for people with epilepsy.
The last session will be following the theme of yoga and mindfulness and will end with a breathing exercise. Afterwards, everyone who takes part in the full day of workshops can have a free swim in the spa.
Ann Sivapatham, Wales manager, said: “Most of us find ourselves frequently ‘swept away’ by the current of thoughts and feelings, worries, pressures, responsibilities; wanting things to be different from how they are right now. This can be particularly powerful when you are faced with difficulties and illness that baffle your attempts to find a solution or to feel better. Feeling stuck in this way can be draining. This day will bring you up to date with what is happening in the world of epilepsy and help you to deal with negative thoughts, feelings and sensations associated with the condition. It will give you ideas on how to minimise these, and resources to help you make wiser decisions about your life in general.”
