Never too young to doodle

2 December, 2008

An 11-year-old girl from Stroud, Gloucestershire, has been chosen as a winner in this year's National Doodle Day competition.

Olivia Johnson was one of hundreds to take part in National Doodle Day earlier this year - a fun event held in aid of two charities, Epilepsy Action and the Neurofibromatosis Association. Members of the public were invited to submit doodles into the national competition.

Maureen Lipman, author and Doodle Day Patron, judged the various categories, and Olivia received a £500 prize with a certificate signed by Maureen. Her work, along with all the other winning doodles, is now displayed in the doodle Hall of Fame at www.nationaldoodleday.org.uk

Olivia said: “I love doodling so much that I have doodles all over my school books! I don't think my teachers are quite as appreciative of my artwork as Epilepsy Action is though. My winning doodle included lots of my favourite things – like an easel, because I love art! I entered the competition because I think it's such a good cause – my aunty has epilepsy, so I know how it can affect people. I entered it just for fun too though. I never expected to win – it's a great surprise!”

The event, which this year included a charity auction of around 400 celebrity doodles, along with a schools competition, has raised more than £160,000 over the last five years.
