Schools encouraged to get creative for charity

23 November, 2010

Schools across the country are being encouraged to show their artistic side as part of this year's National Doodle Day. The event, on Friday 11 February, raises money for two UK neurological charities, Epilepsy Action and The Neurofibromatosis Association.

Pupils and staff are encouraged to draw a doodle and submit it into the annual National Doodle Day competition for the chance to win some fantastic prizes for their school. The winners will also have their work displayed in the doodle Hall of Fame on the National Doodle Day website.

Many schools, colleges and groups have already signed up to the event, which is now in its eighth year. Celebrities such as Fearne Cotton, David Walliams, Matt Lucas, Lesley Ash, Rick Astley, Pete Waterman, Sir Ben Kingsley and Gino D’Acampo have also completed a doodle to auction on eBay as part of the event. The auction will launch on National Doodle Day and run for 10 days, giving people the opportunity to bid on their favourite celebrity doodle.

Philippa Cartwright, fundraising events manager at Epilepsy Action, said: “National Doodle Day is always a fantastic event and absolutely anyone can take part. Since the event began eight years ago, almost £200,000 has been raised to help provide vital support to people with epilepsy and neurofibromatosis. Doodling in this year’s competition is a great way for staff and pupils alike to show their artistic side while supporting a great cause.”

Schools can enter by visiting www.nationaldoodleday.org.uk and registering for an organiser’s pack. The pack contains hints, tips, certificates and template doodle cards. There is a suggested minimum donation of £1 for each doodle entered.
