Simon Wigglesworth, deputy chief executive of Epilepsy Action, says: "We welcome parts of this report. However, we are deeply disappointed that epilepsy is still not recognised as a condition that might cause special educational needs (SEN). There are 58,000 under-18s with epilepsy in the UK and half are estimated to be under-achieving academically.
"This report specifically rules out adding to the list of recognised conditions. We think this is a missed opportunity to break down the barriers some children with epilepsy face in getting access to the support they deserve. Parents of children with epilepsy will continue to face lengthy battles to even have their child considered for a statement of SEN. The current system is failing children with epilepsy, who have every right to be supported to reach their full potential."
