Runners will soon be flocking to the green surrounds of the Calder Valley to take part in Alice's Run, a multi-terrain 10k race being held in aid of Epilepsy Action on Sunday August 31.
Now in its third year, the race was set up to celebrate the life of Blackshawhead girl, Alice Redmond, who died following a tragic accident in August 2005. Alice worked at Epilepsy Action during her student placement year from Leeds Metropolitan University, helping to organise fundraising events and raise awareness to support the 456,000 people living with epilepsy in the UK.
The race will start at 10.30am at Brearley field in Mytholmroyd and will finish at Calder High School. Set in beautiful countryside, the event is expected to attract serious runners and first-timers alike. There will be T-shirts for all the finishers, and prizes for male and female first, second and third as well as veterans. A one mile junior trail race will also take place in the school field at 10.45am on the day, along with spectator entertainment. It's set to be a fantastic day out for all the family, so come along and join in the fun!
Philippa Corner, Epilepsy Action's events manager, said: "For the past two years, Alice's Run has proved very popular. Last year's run attracted 250 runners and raised over £6,000. Alice was an asset to the Epilepsy Action team, and we're determined to make this year's race just as successful as a fitting tribute to her memory."
Alice’s mother, Liv Redmond, said: “Alice enjoyed a very happy and constructive time at Epilepsy Action. At the end of her year there she emerged as a much more confident person. We are really grateful to them for that. We are also very pleased that the run continues to be a popular and successful event and we'll support it in any way we can. Alice was a very enthusiastic person who enjoyed life to the full and the run continues in her memory. We hope it will be even more successful than last year.”
