Winning Doodler Is 'Proper Chuffed'

2 December, 2008

A grandfather of seven from Pudsey, Leeds, has been chosen as a winner in this year's National Doodle Day competition.

At 78 years old, Geoff Spanton was one of hundreds to take part in National Doodle Day earlier this year - a fun event held in aid of two charities, Epilepsy Action and the Neurofibromatosis Association. Members of the public were invited to submit their doodles into the national competition.

Maureen Lipman, author and Doodle Day Patron, judged the various categories, and Geoff received a £500 prize with a certificate signed by Maureen. His work, along with all the other winning doodles, is now displayed in the doodle Hall of Fame at www.nationaldoodleday.org.uk

Geoff said: “I'm completely overwhelmed, or, as a true Yorkshire man would say, 'proper chuffed' to be a Doodle Day winner! I've always been a bit of a doodler, but now I'm retired I can doodle to my heart's content. When the opportunity to doodle for such a worthy cause came along, I pounced on it! And the prize – well, that's more than a month's pension – wonderful!”

The event, which this year included a charity auction of around 400 celebrity doodles, along with a schools competition, has raised more than £160,000 over the last five years.
