Epilepsy Action holds action day in Newcastle

3 October, 2011

Epilepsy Action, the UK’s largest member-led epilepsy organisation, is holding an information day to support people with epilepsy, their families and carers.

The event will take place on Saturday 15 October, at Newcastle Civic Centre, Barras Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne, from 9.30am until 3.00pm. It is open to anyone with an interest in epilepsy.

Speakers include leading consultant neurologist, Susan Duncan, from Western General Hospital, Edinburgh. Dr Rob Forsyth, local consultant paediatrician, will be talking about epilepsy and children and Beth Irwin, epilepsy specialist and midwife, will be talking about men and epilepsy. Others include Nancy Bone, from Newcastle Welfare Rights Service, and Rachel Parsons from Newcastle Carers Centre.

There will be an opportunity to take away epilepsy information on a range of subjects, and talk to people who have had similar experiences. Volunteers will be on hand to give information on epilepsy issues and local branches of Epilepsy Action.

Cliff Challenger, Epilepsy Action’s local services manager for the north of England, said: “This is an exciting event for anyone living with epilepsy, their families and their friends. Beth Irwin is one of the few midwives in the UK with a specialist interest in epilepsy – and essential session for younger women and their partners. We have two distinguished consultants - Rob Forsyth, and Susan Duncan. Information is available on benefits and caring for someone with epilepsy and there are opportunities to share experiences.”

There is a small charge for the event. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Anyone who would like to attend the meeting, or requires further information, should contact Cliff Challenger, Epilepsy Action’s local services manager, on 01274 640 064 (mobile: 07843 359 714), or at cchallenger@epilepsy.org.uk
