Rochdale woman takes on 10k challenge for epilepsy charity

17 May, 2012

A Rochdale woman, who has epilepsy, is preparing to lace up her running shoes to complete this year’s Bupa Great Manchester Run.  Hannah Gayne will attempt the challenging 10k run on Sunday 20 May to raise vital funds for national charity Epilepsy Action. The charity provides advice and support to the 600,000 people with epilepsy in the UK. Hannah will also be raising money for Bury Society for Blind and Partially Sighted People.

Hannah, who lives in Norden, is taking part for Epilepsy Action because she has epilepsy herself. This will be the sixth time Hannah has taken part in the Bupa Great Manchester Run. She also completed the nine-mile Derwentwater Wonga Conga for Epilepsy Action in 2010.

Hannah, 20, said: “I have epilepsy and Epilepsy Action has helped me a lot. I’d really like to help them raise awareness and funds to support others with epilepsy. I’m really looking forward to the event and am hoping to be my previous time of one hour 39 minutes.”

Hannah hopes to raise over £400, split between Epilepsy Action and Bury Society for Blind and Partially Sighted People. The money raised by Hannah for Epilepsy Action will help to support the charity’s work all over the UK. The charity campaigns to improve epilepsy services and raise awareness of epilepsy. It also provides a national network of support groups, funds a specialist nurse scheme, holds regular regional conferences and has a freephone and email helpline. The money raised for the Bury Society for Blind and Partially Sighted People will go to support members and organise social events.

Epilepsy affects one in every 103 people in the UK alone and 87 people are diagnosed with the condition every day. Last year Epilepsy Action directly helped 1.1 million people through its range of services.
