We exist to improve the lives
of everyone affected by epilepsy

Epilepsy Action Gold Award winner announced (Haverfordwest)

7 June, 2007

Michael Butcher, lecturer in equine studies, riding instructor and yard manager at Bowlings Riding Centre has been honoured with an Epilepsy Action Gold Award for Education for helping to improve the lives of people with epilepsy.

Michael was nominated by his student, Stephanie Elder, who was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 15. Stephanie nominated Michael because she feels that he has been understanding of her epilepsy and extremely supportive since she began taking riding lessons at Bowlings Riding Centre. Thanks to his encouragement she has also undertaken an NVQ in equine studies at Pembrokeshire College where Michael is her course tutor.

By running the award, Epilepsy Action is recognising best practice and honouring teachers who show understanding and help people with epilepsy to overcome difficulties in education.

Stephanie, who is also secretary for Epilepsy Action’s Haverfordwest branch says: “From day one Michael has supported and encouraged me in my studies. He has helped me to build my confidence and I feel that it is only with his support and reassurance that I am able to do what I love.”

Michael was presented with the Epilepsy Gold Award for Employment today by Dee Polacarz, chair of Epilepsy Action’s Haverfordwest Branch, at a special ceremony held at Bowlings Riding Centre in Haverfordwest to mark the occasion.

Michael says: “I am thrilled to have been nominated for this award and I am very proud to accept it today. Stephanie is a very able person and with just a few adjustments, we have been able to ensure she can continue to fulfil her potential.”
