Epilepsy experts join together in Belfast

7 September, 2007

A one day conference on epilepsy, aimed at anyone with an interest in the condition, will take place in Belfast on Saturday 22 September 2007. Epilepsy specialist nurses will be present in the afternoon with the opportunity for delegates to have one to one consultations.

The event is being organised by the UK’s leading member-led epilepsy charity, Epilepsy Action. The conference will be held from 9.30am until 4.00pm at the Holiday Inn, Ormeau Avenue, Belfast, BT2 8HS.

The theme of the conference is Epilepsy and You. A wide range of epilepsy experts will be taking part including Mr Peter Richardson, neurosurgeon from Salford Hospital; Dr Henry Smith, general practitioner with a special interest in epilepsy; Dr Andrea Whitney, a paediatrician from Great Ormond Street Hospital; and Emma Williams from charity Matthews Friends. The experts will be discussing how epilepsy is managed in a community setting, how surgery may be a suitable treatment for some people and the ketogenic diet that can help children with difficult to control seizures.

Morina Clarke, Epilepsy Action’s regional services manager for Northern Ireland said: “The conference is a great opportunity to hear from and meet epilepsy experts from all over the UK with time allotted at the end to put your questions to them. Epilepsy Action Northern Ireland branch members will be there to provide information on the work they do in the community through providing support to people with the condition and promoting epilepsy awareness.”

The price of the conference tickets are £10.00 for members of Epilepsy Action; £12.00 for non members; £6.50 concessionary rate for people who are in full time education, in receipt of benefits or on a state pension. Membership of Epilepsy Action can be purchased along with entrance to the conference for a special price of £25.00; or a concessionary membership of Epilepsy Action including conference fee for £17.50.
