Epilepsy information morning in Cardiff

22 September, 2010

Epilepsy Action, the UK’s largest member-led epilepsy organisation, is hosting a seminar for people who have been newly diagnosed with the condition.

The event will take place on Saturday 9 October at the Angel Hotel, Castle Street, Cardiff, from 9.30am to 1.00pm. It is aimed at people who have been newly diagnosed with epilepsy within the last year, and their families. Donations towards the cost of the event will be welcome.

The seminar will cover many aspects of epilepsy. Speakers include Dr Charlotte Lawthom, consultant neurologist from the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, and Professor Phil Smith, consultant neurologist at Wales Epilepsy Unit, University Hospital of Wales. Phil is also a member of the All Wales Advisory Panel. The seminar will include a talk by epilepsy specialist nurse, Malisa Pierri, from the Wales Epilepsy Unit, and Abi Wood, Clinical Psychologist, both from the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

Ann Sivapatham, regional services manager for Wales, said: “This is a great opportunity to find out more about epilepsy in a friendly and informal environment. It is targeted at people over 16 who have a relatively new diagnosis of epilepsy. Come along and find out what help there is out there for you. You will get the chance to meet and talk to epilepsy experts, and share your experiences with others.”

Seats are limited so to book a place, or for further information, please contact Jackie Kemp on 0113 210 8787, or email jkemp@epilepsy.org.uk

Epilepsy Action, the UK’s largest member-led epilepsy organisation, has an extensive network of branches throughout the UK. The Cardiff Branch meets on the first Thursday of every month at 11.00am to 1.00pm at Henry’s Bar, 6-18 Park Chambers, Park Place, Cardiff. The next meeting will take place on Thursday 7 October. The Cardiff branch is also extending its meeting time to an evening so that people who are working can attend. The first meeting in the evening takes place on Tuesday 5 October 6.00pm – 8.00pm at the same venue. A buffet will be provided.

Branch meetings offer the opportunity for people to share their experiences of living with epilepsy and raise awareness of the condition in the local community. The branch’s programme of events includes speaker evenings, fundraising, and social activities.
