Epilepsy Action Cymru is holding a seminar on epilepsy, during the Victorian Festival.
The seminar will take place on 26 August from 10.00am until 4.00pm at the Metropole Hotel, Temple Street, Llandrindod Wells. There will be a general awareness talk on epilepsy at 2.00pm. The event is aimed at anyone with an interest in epilepsy.
Charles Dickens was the foremost English novelist of the Victorian era, as well as a vigorous social campaigner. The Victorian author of such classic books as A Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist had epilepsy, as did several of the characters in his books. The medical accuracy of Dickens's descriptions of epilepsy has amazed the doctors who read him today.
Ann Sivapatham, Epilepsy Action Cymru’s Wales Manager, said: “We would like to help celebrate this event by having an open day to mark Victorian week and to raise awareness. Much has been achieved since the Victorian era but the work is not over yet, and many people still are unaware of exactly what epilepsy is. Come and learn about this condition while soaking up the atmosphere and marvelling at street entertainers. The Victorian Festival is set to be a great event!”
Epilepsy Action Cymru is expanding its network of support branches in Wales. It is hoping to set up a new group in the Llandrindod Wells area. At the moment, there is no support group in the Powys area. If anyone is interested in developing local support for epilepsy, they should contact Ann on 01633 253 407 (mobile: 07767 242658), or email asivapatham@epilepsy.org.uk
The event is being supported by Epilepsy Action’s branches in Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion. There will be an opportunity to take away epilepsy information on a range of subjects, and talk to people who have had similar experiences.
