Free course for people with epilepsy in Omagh to develop IT and personal development skills

9 September, 2011

Epilepsy Action, the UK’s largest member-led epilepsy organisation, has awarded funding to its Omagh Branch to run an IT and personal development course for people with epilepsy. The Omagh Branch is the first Epilepsy Action branch in the UK to be awarded funds from the charity’s ‘Diamond Projects’ scheme.

The IT course will start on Wednesday 21 September from 2.00pm until 4.00pm, and will run for 10 weeks. The venue is Strule Arts Centre, Omagh. The personal development course will run for a further three days, following the IT course.

Both courses are free. To enrol, please contact LeeAnn on 07715 314 228, or email epilepsyactionbranchomagh@yahoo.co.uk

LeeAnn, project coordinator, said: “We are dealing with many types of people, some living in rural areas who may be feeling isolated. We recognise that people living with epilepsy may sometimes find it difficult to do everyday tasks such as shopping and attending social events.  We wanted to develop a course that would help them to improve their self esteem, feel more independent, recognise their strengths and develop a positive attitude. It is also hoped that their social contact will improve and new friendships will be formed. The course will cover how to buy your shopping online and pay bills, as well as improving confidence and enhancing IT skills for employment.”

Diamond Projects have been set up to mark Epilepsy Action’s sixtieth anniversary. The scheme aims to help improve the lives of nearly half a million people with epilepsy in the UK.

Epilepsy is one of the most common serious neurological conditions in the UK.  Epilepsy Action directly helps more than 845,000 people each year through a range of services. These include its advice and information service, specialist nurse scheme and Epilepsy Helpline freephone 0808 800 5050. For more information, visit www.epilepsy.org.uk
