Professionals speak at Belfast epilepsy conference

16 September, 2009

National charity Epilepsy Action is holding a conference in Belfast on Saturday 26 September to support people with epilepsy.

The conference will take place at the Holiday Inn, Ormeau Avenue, from 10.00am to 4.00pm.  The conference will provide an opportunity for people with epilepsy and their families to update themselves on the latest developments.  It will also provide an opportunity to meet other people with the condition and to meet Epilepsy Action representatives. Lunch and refreshments will be provided and there is access to free literature about many aspects of epilepsy.

Guest speakers include Professor Tony Marson, consultant neurologist at The Walton Centre, Liverpool and Dr Damien Hughes, consultant psychiatrist (learning disability) at the Belfast Trust. Professor Marson will cover drug treatment for epilepsy and Dr Hughes will speak about learning disability and epilepsy.  Una Wilson from the Equality Commission and Rita Howson from charity, Support Dogs, will also speak at the conference. Simon Wigglesworth, deputy chief executive at Epilepsy Action, will give an update on the charity's latest campaigning activities.

Morina Clarke, regional services manager at Epilepsy Action, said: "The annual Epilepsy Action conference in Belfast is always popular. It provides people with the opportunity to come together and learn more about epilepsy. It also enables people to meet others affected by the condition and discuss issues affecting people living with epilepsy.

We are delighted that we have secured such good speakers for the conference. The presentations will cover a wide variety of issues, meaning the event will be of interest to anyone who is affected by epilepsy."

Seats are limited, so to book a place contact Morina Clarke, Epilepsy Action's regional services manager for Northern Ireland, on 028 9063 4942 or email mclarke@epilepsy.org.uk Tickets cost £17, with a reduced rate for concessions and Epilepsy Action members.
