Nicki walks her way to charity ‘wonga’

6 July, 2010

A Harlow woman, whose sister tragically died after an epileptic seizure, is preparing to raise serious ‘wonga’ for Epilepsy Action, the UK’s largest member-led epilepsy charity in memory of her sister Tania Knight.

Nicki Walker has organised an Epilepsy Action Wonga Walk through Lea Valley Park, near Harlow at 10.30am on Sunday 11 July. It is hoped 40 walkers will complete the six- mile route, which starts and finishes at the park’s car park.  The walk is suitable for all abilities and route maps will be provided.

Nicki said: “My sister sadly died after an epileptic seizure on 22nd March 2003 when she was 37. I have been trying to raise as much money as I can ever since to help people with epilepsy and raise awareness of the condition.  I’m really looking forward to the sense of team spirit as we walk around the lovely venue. We are also planning to finish with a picnic, which will be a great way to celebrate us completing the walk.”

The walk is one of several Wonga Walks taking place across the country to celebrate Epilepsy Action’s sixtieth anniversary. The charity is hoping the walks will clock up a total distance of 9,240 miles – equivalent to walking to Timbuktu and back. To achieve this target, Epilepsy Action needs 60 walking groups of 25 people, each walking a distance of six miles.

Nicki hopes her walk will raise at least £1,000. The money raised by the Wonga Walks will help fund the vital advice and information services provided by Epilepsy Action.
