We have been made aware that a review of the case notes of children with epilepsy will take place at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. This is in response to concerns raised about the medical practice of a consultant paediatrician with an interest in epilepsy and neurology, at the hospital.
Philip Lee, chief executive at Epilepsy Action, said: “This is understandably a very worrying time for the parents and children involved. We trust the hospital will carry out a full and thorough review and inform the families of the outcome as quickly as possible”
“Epilepsy is a complex condition and there is no single definitive test to confirm a diagnosis. It is therefore important that the condition is diagnosed and treated by a doctor who is a specialist in epilepsy.”
People should not stop taking their medication without consulting a doctor.
The Royal Surrey County Hospital has set up a telephone helpline for members of the public who are concerned, 01483 408 379. There is also information available on the hospital’s website at www.royalsurrey.nhs.uk/review
