Epilepsy Action looks set to establish a Bristol branch following a meeting to gauge levels of support.
Helen King, Epilepsy Action’s regional services manager in the south west said: “With a population of 400,000 there are at least 3,000 people with epilepsy in the city who could benefit from a local branch. Such a group will further allow us to improve public awareness of epilepsy and reduce the prejudice and ignorance that surrounds the condition.”
Jackie Hughes a prospective volunteer who is helping to form the branch says:
“This support group will be a fantastic way to allow members to talk, share their experiences, concerns, and gain knowledge of epilepsy and advice on what services are available to them. Just as importantly, it will help people with epilepsy to feel that they are not alone, and it will allow us to campaign to improve the current medical services in Bristol and get a much needed Sapphire nurse by working together with medical specialists from Frenchay.”
At the inaugural meeting Helen gave a presentation on Epilepsy Action and the work of the branch network. Dr Samden Lhatoo, consultant neurologist from Frenchay hospital spoke about local services from his perspective as an expert in epilepsy surgery.
Epilepsy Action has an extensive network of branches throughout the UK, which are run by volunteers. Most hold regular meetings and offer a mixture of social events and informative talks and discussions. The meetings also offer the opportunity to talk to people who understand what it is like to live with epilepsy as well as a chance to help raise awareness of epilepsy in the local community.
