Epilepsy Action, the UK’s largest member-led epilepsy organisation, is celebrating 30 years of supporting people with epilepsy in the Warwick area.
A birthday party will take place on Monday 13 June from 7.30pm at Oddfellows Hall, 6 Clarence Terrace, Warwick Street, Leamington Spa. Photos and memorabilia will be on display to celebrate its history, and suggestions for the future of local epilepsy services are invited. Staff from Epilepsy Action’s national office will be present to record suggestions and celebrate the anniversary. Epilepsy information will be available to take away.
The Warwick District Branch started in 1981. It has continued to exist and grow thanks to the support of local volunteers. Five of the volunteers have been members of the branch almost since its inception.
The branch has been involved with many activities including raising awareness at the Kenilworth Carnival, and Warwick Festival. Branch members work closely with health professionals to support the understanding of epilepsy. They helped to secure the appointment of an epilepsy specialist nurse at the University Hospital Coventry. They have also built up a great relationship with the Health and Information Centre within the hospital.
Beryl, chair of the Warwick District Branch, has been involved since 1984. She said: “The branch members and I would be delighted if people in the local area came to help us celebrate this very special occasion. Light refreshments, biscuits, tea, coffee and fruit punch will be available. We are hoping that some of the photos will jog a few memories! I would also like to thank our dedicated supporters who have continually donated to us over the years. They have helped to make sure that the branch continued and that there is support for people with epilepsy in the local area.”
For anyone wishing to join the celebration, or needing information about epilepsy, please contact Beryl on 07759 515 346, or Chris on 01926 731 523, so catering requirements can be fulfilled.
The Warwick District Branch meets on the second Monday of the month from 7.30pm to at Oddfellows Hall, 6 Clarence Terrace, Warwick Street, Leamington Spa.
Epilepsy Action has an extensive network of branches throughout the UK. Branches hold regular meetings and offer a variety of social events and informative talks and discussions relating to epilepsy. Meetings offer the opportunity for people to share their experiences of living with epilepsy, and help to raise awareness of the condition in the local community.
