Another Success for Alice’s Run (Mytholmroyd)

10 September, 2007

The second annual Alice’s Run, a 10km race around the Calder Valley, attracted 250 runners and walkers and raised £6000 for Epilepsy Action.

Last year’s winner, Peter Rigler, was again first to cross the finish line. Peter, from Barnstaple, North Devon, finished the race in 38 minutes. The first woman to cross the line was Holmfirth runner Jaqui Dews, in 45 minutes.

Peter said: “Like last year, the atmosphere was great and, although I was happy just to take part in something so worthwhile, winning again was of course a great bonus!”

Runners from all over the UK also included actress Carley Stenson, whose Hollyoaks character Stephanie Dean, has epilepsy. The event is held in memory of student Alice Redmond, from Blackshawhead, near Hebden Bridge. Alice, who was working at Epilepsy Action during her student placement in 2005, died following an accident.

The race started at Brearley Field, Mytholmroyd and finished at Calder High School. There was also a children’s fun run and spectator entertainment.

Epilepsy is the UK’s most common serious neurological condition affecting an estimated 456,000 people. Epilepsy Action is a registered charity. As well as campaigning to improve epilepsy services and raise awareness of the condition, the charity offers assistance in a number of ways including a national network of branches, accredited volunteers, regular regional conferences, an Epilepsy Helpline freephone 0808 800 5050, and an award-winning website - www.epilepsy.org.uk – which features a new online advice and information service.
