About the study
The researchers are funded by the National Institute for Health Research. They are developing the course because some people with epilepsy say they are not given enough information about their condition. This means they may not be sure about how to best deal with their epilepsy.
Rather than starting from scratch, the researchers are bringing to England a course for people with epilepsy, called MOSES. This course is already running successfully in a number of European countries. Taking the course has helped people with epilepsy know more about epilepsy, become more confident about living with epilepsy and have fewer seizures.
MOSES is a two day course and is delivered to groups of about 10 people. Two health professionals, such as epilepsy nurse specialists, deliver the course. MOSES gives patients information on the things that they have said they want to know more about. This includes its causes, effects, triggers for seizures, the emotional side of having epilepsy and first aid.
When will this study be recruiting?
This study is currently recruiting. The courses will run in late Spring this year.
What will participants be asked to do?
The researchers are looking for around 20 volunteers with epilepsy to test the practice MOSES courses. The courses will be held at the research team’s university. This is on the same site as King’s College Hospital in South London.
Who can take part?
To take part, you need to be being prescribed epilepsy medication, live within the London area and be aged 16 or over. You also need to have had at least two epileptic seizures in the last 12 months. These seizures can be of any type. As the course is given in English, you also need to be able to speak, hear and understand English well.
Who is conducting the research?
The research is being carried out by a team from King’s College London.
Who has reviewed this study?
This study has been reviewed and approved by the Fulham Research Ethics Committee.
