Vocational certificate in epilepsy
For a number of years Epilepsy Action has recognised the need to improve peoples' knowledge of epilepsy and its management. We are also committed to the recognition, through qualifications, of people's skills and experience.
Epilepsy Action has developed a unique qualification: the Vocational Certificate in Epilepsy (VCE). Working in partnership with Leeds Metropolitan University and Neuro Education in York, Epilepsy Action's Certificate has been validated by the approvals board at the university.
The aim of the course is to provide a relevant and flexible distance learning programme for people with an interest in epilepsy, leading to a recognised qualification in epilepsy. The course will enable participants to gain skills, knowledge and understanding - all to enhance their abilities in assisting people with the condition.
The course structure is based around five learning packages. The first four involve the use of distance learning and the fifth is a reflective practice assignment, based on personal experience. All can be studied and completed at your convenience in your local area. Two optional day workshops are offered in Leeds, the first at the beginning of the course and a second halfway through. Most students should complete the course in two years.
The distance learning materials contain tasks to complete, including review questions, end of unit assessments and multiple choice questionnaires. Students will also have to complete three observation visits which may include schools, disability employment schemes or accompanying an epilepsy specialist nurse. The VCE course will be made up of the following packages:
- Learning Package One - Basics of Epilepsy: The causes, types of, natural history and diagnosis. Workshop One will include principles of adult learning, equal opportunities and an introduction to assessment and reflective practice.
- Learning Package Two - Managing Epilepsy: The objectives of treatment including individual anti-epileptic drug profiles, known side effects, neurosurgery, vagal nerve stimulation, alternative and complementary therapies and prognosis.
- Learning Package Three - Social and Psychological Aspects of Epilepsy: An introduction to the social and psychological implications of epilepsy such as driving, social life, leisure, safety, employment, education, stigma, self perception, anxiety and depression.
- Learning Package Four - Campaigning for organising the best epilepsy care: The process of informing and educating, advocacy, sectors of health care, the roles of professionals, the family and the voluntary sector.
- Learning Package Five - Reflective Practice Assessment: The summative assessment of the Award, based on applying the other units, experience and reading to the student's work and life situation.
Students working at home can access support at anytime through a dedicated helpline. This is in addition to the academic tutor that the university will assign to each student. The main assessed assignment will be discussed in detail with the tutor who will ensure it is of an acceptable standard.
