Personal accident insurance
Personal Accident Insurance is payable in the event of death, loss of one or more limbs, and loss of sight in one or both eyes or permanent total disablement resulting from an accident.
Epilepsy Action members receive £1,000 worth of Personal Accident Insurance, absolutely free!
Members of Epilepsy Action automatically receive one unit of Personal Accident Insurance absolutely free when they pay their annual membership fees. This free unit provides £1,000 worth of cover for the duration of the membership - join today.
Members can also buy extra units in blocks of five at a cost of £1 a unit, for a year and each unit represents £500 worth of cover. Members can purchase extra units up to a maximum of £21,000 of cover.
Life members of Epilepsy Action also receive one free unit each year for the first five years, where the unit is worth £1,500 instead of the standard £500.
Only registered members of Epilepsy Action are eligible for this policy. It does not cover any other relative or friend. Therefore, if you have a child with epilepsy and would like them to receive the benefit of the insurance cover, the membership must be in the child’s name. However, the parent can make payments on the child’s behalf.
Personal Accident Insurance provides the following benefits for each member:
- Death resulting from an accident - £1,000, plus £500 for each additional unit of Personal Accident Insurance purchased
- Loss of one or more limbs resulting from an accident or loss of sight in one or both eyes resulting from an accident - £1,000, plus £500 for each additional unit of Personal Accident Insurance purchased
- Permanent total disablement resulting from an accident - £1,000, plus £500 for each additional unit purchased
Please remember that payment will only be due if any of the above events occur as the result of an accident. New members of Epilepsy Action who are aged 71 or over are unable to obtain Personal Accident Insurance. However, for existing members who continue to renew their membership after the age of 70, the cover will continue but the maximum benefit payable shall be restricted to £5,000.
For members who are aged up to 17 and in full time education and have purchased more than 10 additional units, the Death benefit is limited to £5,000. However, the other benefits are not limited.
Our policy covers you against death, loss of limb/eye or permanent disability, even if the accident causes a seizure or is the result of a seizure. This cover is not available under other accident policies.
What isn’t covered?
Like all insurance policies, there are certain situations and activities for which the policy does not apply. These include:
- Injury as a direct result of epilepsy where no accident has occurred
- Suicide or self-injury
- War or undeclared war
- Illness
- Pregnancy and childbirth
- Flying (other than as a passenger in a scheduled commercial flight)
- Mountaineering or rock climbing
- Diving, parachuting or hang-gliding
- Racing (horses or any other vehicle)
- Motor cycling (other than as a pillion rider)
- Breakage of teeth or spectacles
However, if you wish to take part in an excluded activity and can convince the insurers that your epilepsy is controlled, you may be able to obtain cover on a one-off basis.
What does it all mean?
The terms used by insurers can be very complicated, but they have very specific meanings. That’s why we’ve put together a list of definitions – it is important that you understand what these definitions mean so that you know exactly what you and your family can claim.
Death – injury caused by an accident that results in death within one year of the accident.
Loss of limb – accidental injury that causes loss of either or both of your arms or legs within one year of the accident. This may be actual loss due to amputation or total loss of the use of the limb(s).
Loss of eye – accidental injury that causes total and irrecoverable loss of sight.
Permanent total disablement – complete disability (except as stated above) caused by an accident within one year of the date of the accident, which has lasted for at least one year and which prevents you working in any occupation for which you are fitted by education, training or experience for the rest of your life.
