Hormones, sex and contraception

Hormones

During puberty your body produces more sex hormones. Hormones have an effect on the brain, and sometimes seizures can start for the first time during puberty.

Young womanSome women with epilepsy notice a link between their seizures and their periods. This type of epilepsy is called catamenial epilepsy. If you think there’s a link for you, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor or epilepsy specialist about this. Keeping a diary of your seizures and periods can help your doctor or specialist to see if there’s a link.

Sex

Many people with epilepsy worry that a seizure might happen during sex. In fact a seizure is no more likely to occur at this time than at any other.

Contraception

Some AEDs can interact with the contraceptive pill or injection, meaning it wouldn’t give you as much protection against getting pregnant. It’s important to talk to your doctor or epilepsy specialist about this, to make sure you’re getting the best contraception for you.
