Council of Management meeting - May 2014

At its meeting on 13 May, the Council of Management considered a review of the charity’s auditors and consequently decided to re-appoint Baker Tilly UK Audit LLP to the position. The three Council Committees – Corporate Governance, Finance & Strategic Policy and Research – were all renewed for a further 12 months after considering their annual reports. A new strategy for research to run until the end of 2018 was approved. This followed several months of work by the Research Committee to put the plans together. These now provide an exciting focus for Epilepsy Action’s commitment to research in the future.

Council members welcomed Steve Scott from the charity’s investment mangers, Brewin Dolphin. Every year, the investment managers make a personal presentation to the Council to report on the previous 12 months and explain future plans. Council members also receive monthly written reports about the investments. But this annual face-to-face meeting is an important opportunity for them to assess the performance of the management of the charity’s investments.

The meeting concluded with presentations about current operational activity. Helen Murray-Sharpe, national manager for Local Services, explained about developments in working with volunteers. Epilepsy Action now has more than 900 registered volunteers and 20 different volunteering roles. Georgina Matson-Phippard, electronic learning officer, updated Council about the exciting and unique work being done with the charity’s online learning resources.

The next meeting of the Council is scheduled to take place on 15 July 2014.
