We exist to improve the lives
of everyone affected by epilepsy

Dr Maurice J Parsonage

It was with great sadness that the Association learned this week that Dr Maurice Parsonage BSc MB FRCP DCH has passed away aged in his mid 90s.

Dr Parsonage was a great friend and supporter of the Association for something like 50 years, serving as a trustee of the charity between 1974 and 1977 and as a Vice President from 1986 to 2001 and finally as an honorary life member. In addition, he served on the Association’s Medical Advisory Committee as a member and later Chairman for more than 20 years.  He was also a founder trustee of the British Epilepsy Research Foundation and served as an Honorary Medical Adviser to the Association.

Those who heard him speak will recall that Dr Parsonage had the rare gift of being able to talk about a medical subject in a way which non-medical people could understand. That is why the Association made very great use of his ability and of his willingness to talk to many different groups of people. By the early 1970's Dr Parsonage had already spoken at more than 100 courses, conferences and other meetings on behalf of BEA.

In addition to giving much time to speaking engagements, Dr Parsonage also took a special interest in the granting of driving licences to people with epilepsy.  For many years he served on the panel of medical advisers to the Ministry of Transport.  He was also the chairman of international committees on this aspect of epilepsy and he served on similar committees on drugs used in the treatment of epilepsy. He spoke at international workshops organised by the International Bureau for Epilepsy in Africa and India and in 1972 he was recognised as an international Ambassador for Epilepsy.

The Association sends its condolences to Dr Parsonage’s family and for one final time we thank Dr Parsonage for his lifetime of care and support for people with epilepsy.
