Written evidence to the Public Bill Committee for the Children and Families Bill
Submitted March 2013
Epilepsy Action recently joined the Health Conditions in Schools Alliance. The Alliance is coordinated by Diabetes UK and 35 charity organisations have membership so far.
The Alliance submitted written evidence to the Public Bill Committee for the Children and Families Bill on behalf of its members. Our joint concern is that the Bill omits any consideration of educational and health support in school for children who have a health condition but not an identified special educational need (SEN).
This means that the Bill does not provide a procedure for supporting children with epilepsy - unless they have an identified Special Educational Need. Yet children with epilepsy might require help and support to fully access learning in a safe environment, as discussed in the written evidence.
