Consensus statement

To show support for epilepsy specialist nurses (ESNs), doctors and organisations with an interest in epilepsy have come together and put their name to a statement of support.

This consensus statement was published in the ‘Letters to Editor’ section of The Daily Telegraph on Thursday 12 August 2010.

If you are a clinician and would like to add your name to this consensus statement, please email pscott@epilepsy.org.uk.

Epilepsy specialist nurses (ESNs) play a central role in the treatment and care of people with epilepsy. There are around 250 ESNs in the UK. However, on the basis of the recommendations of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Epilepsy, 1,100 nurses would be needed to provide comprehensive cover for the UK.

ESNs review the control of seizures, adjusting or changing medication as required, and provide essential advice and information. They give support and time to help reduce the impact of a serious and often misunderstood condition. Their educational role includes helping patients to understand risks associated with epilepsy and cope with emergencies.

By dealing with many practical problems, ESNs also free up neurologists to concentrate on more complex cases. They make comparatively inexpensive early interventions which may reduce more expensive emergency care.

In these times of economic uncertainty and budget restraint, trusts are understandably looking to make savings. It is for this reason that we believe it is important to highlight the invaluable contribution of ESNs. We are aware that some ESNs are being asked to do reduced hours in their speciality and a number of posts are under review. Such reductions threaten the quality of patient care and any economies will be false because they will impact adversely on patient care. We call for an end to these cuts and a national plan to ensure all patients who need to access an ESN can do so.
